How to Upload Files Larger Than 5 GB

FTP is fine for everyday uploads, but it has a size ceiling. On FimuroHost Cloud Hosting, a single FTP upload or download is currently limited to 5 GB. Limits can change; ask support if you need more.

For larger files, such as full-site backups, database dumps or video archives, transfer them over SFTP through an SSH connection. SFTP transfers are not subject to the FTP size limit, and they are encrypted too.

Before you start

• Set up SSH access for your site in StackCP (SSH Access, under the Security section). See our guides on connecting via SSH with a key or with a password and 2FA.
• Install an SFTP client. Good options are WinSCP (Windows), FileZilla (all platforms) or Cyberduck (macOS and Windows).

Upload a large file with WinSCP

1. Open WinSCP and choose New Site.
2. Set File protocol to SFTP.
3. Enter the host ssh.stackcp.com and, as the user name, your domain name (for example example.com), exactly as shown in StackCP's SSH Access section.
4. If you use an SSH key, click Advanced > SSH > Authentication and select your private key file.
5. Click Login and enter your passphrase, or your 2FA code and SSH password, when asked.
6. Drag your file from the left pane (your computer) to the right pane (your hosting).

Tips

• Compress first. Zipping a folder into one archive transfers faster than thousands of small files. You can then unzip it over SSH with unzip archive.zip.
• Use a stable connection. Large transfers can take a long time, so use a wired or reliable connection and let WinSCP resume if it drops.
• Keep big files out of public_html unless visitors really need to download them, especially backups and database dumps.
• Watch your disk space. Very large files count towards your plan's storage.
