FTP Not Connecting? How to Fix Common FTP Problems

Can't connect over FTP? Work through four quick checks: the right host name, your FTP DNS record, the StackCP FTP lock, and your login details.

Nearly every FTP connection failure on FimuroHost Cloud Hosting comes down to one of four things. Work through the checks below in order; most people are connected again within a few minutes.

1. Are you using the right host name?

The host ftp.yourdomain.com only works once your domain uses our nameservers. If you have not switched your nameservers yet, or you have only just switched them, connect with the platform host name instead:

Site typeFTP host to use
Standard Linux or Windows hostingftp.stackcp.com
WordPress-optimised hostingwordpressftp.stackcp.com

The FTP Details section in StackCP always shows the correct host for your site, so copy it from there if you are unsure.

2. Does your domain have an FTP DNS record?

If you manage DNS somewhere other than FimuroHost (for example at your registrar or a CDN), you need a CNAME record so that ftp.yourdomain.com reaches our servers:

Type: CNAME
Name: ftp
Value: ftp.stackcp.com

For WordPress-optimised hosting, point it to wordpressftp.stackcp.com instead. New records usually start working within about an hour.

3. Is FTP unlocked?

For security, FTP access is locked until you open it. To unlock it:

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at app.fimurohost.com.
  2. Go to Services and select your Cloud Hosting plan.
  3. Click Login to Control Panel / StackCP. StackCP opens for that website, already signed in.
  4. In the FTP panel on the right, unlock FTP either for a set time or for your current IP address.

StackCP shows when the unlock expires. If you unlocked by IP and your internet connection has since changed IP (common with mobile data and many home broadband lines), unlock again.

4. Are your login details correct?

Open the FTP Details section for your site in StackCP and compare the username and password with what your FTP client is using. Watch out for:

  • Extra spaces copied at the start or end.
  • An old password saved in your client's Site Manager.
  • Logging in with an additional FTP user whose password you have since changed.

Other things to try

  • Switch to passive mode in your client's transfer settings. Some office and public networks block active FTP.
  • Try another network, such as a mobile hotspot. If that works, a firewall on your original network is blocking FTP.
  • Use SFTP instead. If you have SSH set up, SFTP runs over a single encrypted connection and avoids most firewall issues.
