How to Set Up Email Forwarders in cPanel

Forward mail from one address to another in cPanel, forward a whole domain, send unrouted mail to a default address and avoid the problems forwarding to Gmail can cause.

A forwarder sends a copy of every message that arrives at one address to another address. For example, you can forward [email protected] to your Gmail, or send mail for info@ to two staff members. A forwarder can exist on its own (no mailbox needed) or alongside a real mailbox, in which case the mail is kept and forwarded.

Add a forwarder for one address

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at https://app.fimurohost.com.
  2. Go to Services and select your cPanel Hosting plan.
  3. Click Login to cPanel. cPanel opens in a new tab, already signed in.
  4. In the Email section, click Forwarders.
  5. Click Add Forwarder.
  6. Address to Forward: enter the part before the @, for example sales. Choose the Domain from the menu.
  7. Under Destination, choose Forward to Email Address and type the address to receive the mail. To send to several people, separate the addresses with commas.
  8. Click Add Forwarder.

Send a test message from a different email account to check it arrives. To change a forwarder later, delete it and create a new one, because existing forwarders cannot be edited.

Other destination options

OptionWhen to use it
Discard and send an error to the senderPolitely reject mail to an address you no longer use, with your own message such as “This address is closed, please write to info@…”.
Discard (Advanced)Silently drop the mail. Useful for addresses that only receive spam.
Pipe to a Program (Advanced)Pass the message to a script, for example a ticket system. Only use this if your software’s instructions ask for it.

Forward a whole domain

A domain forwarder sends mail for a domain to the same address at another domain, for example [email protected] to [email protected]. Click Add Domain Forwarder, choose the source domain, type the destination domain and click Add Domain Forwarder. Domain forwarders only handle addresses that do not already exist as mailboxes or forwarders on the source domain.

Default address (catch-all)

Mail sent to an address that does not exist on your domain is handled by the Default Address setting (Email » Default Address). The safest setting is to reject it with an error. Forwarding all unknown addresses to a real mailbox (“catch-all”) is possible, but it attracts large amounts of spam and we do not recommend it.

Forwarding to Gmail, Outlook.com or Yahoo

Big free providers check forwarded mail very strictly. If you forward a lot of mail (especially spam) to them, they may delay or reject it, and that can affect your server’s reputation. Better options:

  • Create a real mailbox and add it to the Gmail app with IMAP, or use Gmail’s “Check mail from other accounts” feature, instead of forwarding.
  • If you do forward, turn on Spam Filters first so obvious spam is not passed on.

Common problems

  • Forwarded mail never arrives: check the destination address for typing mistakes and look in its spam folder. Ask the sender to try again; if it still fails, open a ticket with the time the message was sent.
  • Mail stays in the original mailbox too: that is expected when a mailbox and forwarder share the same address. Delete old mail regularly or remove the mailbox if you only need forwarding.
  • Loop warnings: never forward A to B and B back to A.
