Email Forwarding and Catch-All Addresses Explained

Understand the two kinds of email forwarding on FimuroHost: forwarding a single address and catch-all forwarding for any address on your domain.

Email forwarding automatically re-sends messages that arrive at one address on to another address. For example, mail sent to [email protected] can be delivered straight to [email protected] or to a colleague's mailbox.

The two types of forwarding

Individual forwarding

You set up forwarding for one specific address. You can use it in two ways:

  • Forward-only address: create an address such as [email protected] without a mailbox. It stores nothing; every message is simply passed on to the addresses you choose. This is a free and tidy way to give out role addresses.
  • Forward from an existing mailbox: add forwarding to a mailbox you already have, so messages go to the mailbox and to another address.

Catch-all forwarding

A catch-all picks up email sent to any address on your domain that doesn't exist as a mailbox or forwarder. If someone mistypes [email protected] instead of [email protected], the catch-all makes sure the message isn't lost.

A catch-all only applies when no matching mailbox or forwarder already exists; real addresses always receive their own mail.

Setting it up

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at https://app.fimurohost.com, go to Services, select your hosting plan and click Login to Control Panel / StackCP.
  2. Go to the email section and open the forwarders option.
  3. Enter the address to forward from and the destination address(es), or choose the catch-all option for your domain, then save.

Tips

  • Catch-alls attract spam. Spammers often guess random addresses, and a catch-all accepts them all. If spam becomes a problem, switch it off and create forwarders for the specific addresses you need.
  • Forwarding to Gmail or Outlook.com: forwarded spam can hurt delivery of your forwarded mail. Keep your junk filters on and set up SPF and DKIM for your domain.
  • Replying as your business address: if you read forwarded mail in Gmail, add your FimuroHost address under Gmail's "Send mail as" using smtp.stackmail.com, so replies come from your own domain.
  • Avoid forwarding loops, such as A forwarding to B while B forwards back to A.
