How to Change the PHP Version for Your Website

Newer PHP versions are faster and get security fixes, so it pays to run your site on a current release. FimuroHost Cloud Hosting lets you choose the PHP version for each website yourself.

Which versions are available?

Several current PHP 8.x versions are offered, and the newest supported release is the best choice for most sites. The exact list is shown in StackCP when you switch. Older, end-of-life versions may still appear for legacy sites, but they no longer get security updates, so use them only as a short-term stopgap.

Before you switch

• Back up your files and database.
• Update everything first: WordPress core, plugins and themes, or your framework and Composer packages. Outdated code is the main cause of problems after an upgrade.
• Check requirements: look up the PHP versions your CMS, theme or app supports.
• Encoded software: if you use ionCube-encoded scripts, confirm the vendor supports the new PHP version.

Change the version

1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area, open Services and select your hosting plan.
2. Click Login to Control Panel / StackCP. StackCP opens with the tools for that website (single sign-on, so there is no second password to type).
3. Click Switch PHP Version (called PHP Version Manager in some StackCP layouts).
4. Choose the version you want and save.

The change is usually instant but can take up to 60 seconds. Then load a few pages, log in to your admin area and test key features such as forms, checkout and search.

If something breaks

1. Switch back to the previous version using the same steps. Your site should recover straight away.
2. Check your site's error log for the failing plugin, theme or file.
3. Update or replace that component, then try the newer version again.

WordPress-optimised packages

On WordPress-optimised packages PHP runs with a fixed, pre-tuned configuration, and you may not be able to pick the version yourself. If you need a specific version, contact support.
