ImageMagick and the Imagick PHP Extension on FimuroHost

ImageMagick is a popular open-source toolkit for resizing, converting and editing images. It comes in two forms, and FimuroHost Cloud Hosting supports only one of them, so it's worth knowing the difference.

Using the ImageMagick command-line tools

Every customer can use ImageMagick. The platform currently runs version 6.7.2. If a script or app asks where ImageMagick is installed, use:

• Full path to the binary: /usr/bin/convert
• Directory only (if the setting asks for a folder): /usr/bin

Apps that call ImageMagick this way run it through PHP functions such as exec(). Those functions are disabled on WordPress-optimised packages, so the command-line approach works only on standard Cloud Hosting packages.

The Imagick PHP extension

The Imagick PHP extension isn't currently available on FimuroHost Cloud Hosting, and it can't be switched on per account.

For most WordPress sites this doesn't matter. WordPress automatically falls back to the GD extension (which is installed) for thumbnails, cropping and resizing. Site Health may mention that Imagick is missing, and you can safely ignore that.

It does matter for plugins that require Imagick. For example, WP Quiz Pro needs it for its Facebook Quizzes feature, which won't work here. If a plugin depends on Imagick, you can:

• check the plugin's settings for a GD option
• use an alternative plugin that works with GD
• use an external image service or CDN to do the processing
• contact support to ask whether the situation has changed
