Nameservers decide which DNS provider answers for your domain, and therefore where your website and email are found. If your domain is registered with FimuroHost, you change its nameservers in the client area in a minute. This guide covers the domain side: where the setting is, which values to use, and what to check first so you do not lose your email or other DNS records.

Which nameservers should I use?

Where the website is hostedNameservers
FimuroHost Cloud, WordPress or Windows hostingns1.stackdns.com, ns2.stackdns.com (you can add ns3.stackdns.com and ns4.stackdns.com)
FimuroHost cPanel hostingThe nameservers in your hosting welcome email
FimuroHost VPSYour own nameservers (see Register Private Nameservers), or the DNS service you use for the server

More detail for Cloud hosting is in Nameservers for FimuroHost Cloud Hosting.

Before you change: protect your email and records

Changing nameservers moves all DNS for the domain to the new provider. Any records you had at the old provider (MX for email, TXT for verification, CNAMEs for services) stop being used.

  1. Write down or export your current DNS records, especially MX, TXT (SPF, DKIM, domain verification) and any CNAMEs.
  2. Make sure the website and email are already set up at the new host. For FimuroHost hosting, add the domain to your hosting package first.
  3. Recreate any records you still need (for example Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 MX records) in the new DNS zone before switching.

Step by step

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area, go to Domains → My Domains, and click the domain (or the Manage button next to it).
  2. Open Nameservers.
  3. Choose one of:
    • Use default nameservers: sets FimuroHost's default nameservers.
    • Use custom nameservers: enter your own in the boxes, one per box.
  4. Enter at least two nameservers. Type only the host name, such as ns1.stackdns.com: no http://, no trailing dot, no IP address.
  5. Click Change Nameservers. A success message confirms the registry has accepted them.

How long it takes

The registry updates within minutes, but internet providers cache the old nameservers for up to 24–48 hours, so some visitors see the old site and some see the new one for a while. Email can be split between old and new servers during that time too, so avoid changing nameservers in the middle of important email traffic. See Why Do DNS Changes Take Up to 48 Hours? and How to Check Whether DNS Has Propagated.

Common errors

  • Invalid nameserver / nameserver not found. The name is misspelled, or it is a private nameserver that has not been registered yet. Registries only accept nameservers that exist.
  • Change fails for a domain that is expired, locked or pending transfer. Renew the domain or wait for the transfer to finish. A clientUpdateProhibited status also blocks changes; open a ticket if you did not set it.
  • Website still shows the old site. Wait for caches to expire, clear your browser and DNS cache, or test from mobile data.
  • Email stopped after the change. The MX records were not recreated in the new DNS zone. Add them in the new provider's DNS editor.
  • SSL is not issuing. The free SSL certificate needs the domain to point to us. See Free SSL Requirements.

Nameservers or DNS records?

If you only want to change one thing, such as where the website points, you may not need to change nameservers at all. Keep the current nameservers and edit the A or CNAME record at your current DNS provider instead. Changing nameservers is best when you want FimuroHost to manage all DNS for the domain.

Need help?

If the change is not accepted or your site does not appear, open a support ticket from your client area (choose the Support department and include your domain name), or message us on WhatsApp at 01818160926. We are happy to check your domain for you.
