You have just pointed your domain to FimuroHost or edited a DNS record, yet some people still see your old website. This is normal. It is called DNS propagation, and it can take anywhere from a few minutes up to 24 to 48 hours to finish everywhere.
What is happening behind the scenes
Every domain has at least two nameservers. These are the official source of its DNS records (the "address book" entries that say which server hosts your website and email).
When someone visits your site, their internet provider's DNS server looks up those records and then keeps a copy for a while, so it doesn't have to ask again for every visitor. How long it keeps that copy depends on the record's TTL (time to live).
So when you make a change:
- Your domain's nameservers are updated almost immediately.
- DNS servers around the world keep using their saved copy until it expires.
- As each copy expires, that server fetches the new record.
Because millions of servers refresh at different times, the change rolls out gradually. Nameserver changes at the registry level tend to be the slowest, which is why 24 to 48 hours is the usual guideline.
What you can do while you wait
- Check progress with a free global lookup tool such as whatsmydns.net. It shows which parts of the world already see the new records.
- Clear your own cache. Restart your browser, or flush your computer's DNS cache (on Windows run
ipconfig /flushdnsin Command Prompt). - Try another network. Mobile data often uses different DNS servers from your home or office broadband.
- Keep working. You can still upload files via
ftp.stackcp.comand preview your site on itsstackstaging.comaddress. - Keep your old hosting and email active until the change has finished, so nothing is lost in between.
Tips for faster changes next time
- A day before a planned move, lower the TTL on your records (for example to 300 seconds) at your current DNS provider. Caches then expire faster when you make the switch.
- Avoid making several changes in a row. Each one restarts the waiting game.
