Step-by-step recovery for an expired domain: renew during grace, request a restore during redemption, what fees may apply, and how long until your website and email return.

If your domain has expired, act quickly. The sooner you renew, the cheaper and simpler it is. This guide shows how to find out which stage your domain is in and exactly what to do at each stage.

Step 1: Check the domain's stage

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area, go to Domains → My Domains, and click the domain (or the Manage button next to it).
  2. Look at the status and expiry date on the Overview. You may see labels such as Expired, Grace or Redemption.
  3. For a second opinion, look the domain up at lookup.icann.org. A status of redemptionPeriod means it is in redemption; pendingDelete means it can no longer be recovered.

Step 2a: Expired, still in the renewal grace period

This is the easy case. For most generic extensions, the grace period usually lasts up to about 30 days after expiry, although it varies by extension.

  1. Go to Billing → Invoices. If there is an unpaid renewal invoice for the domain, pay it.
  2. If there is no invoice, go to Domains → Renew Domains, select the domain and renewal period, and check out.
  3. After payment, the renewal is processed with the registry. The new expiry date is counted from the original expiry date, not from today, so you do not gain extra time by waiting.
  4. Your previous nameservers are restored. The website and email normally come back within a few hours as DNS updates, sometimes up to 24–48 hours.

If the renew option is not available for an expired domain, open a ticket straight away. Some extensions have a very short grace period, and we can check the options with the registrar.

Step 2b: In the redemption period

In redemption the domain has been deleted by the registrar, and it can only be restored by a special request to the registry. It usually lasts 30 days.

  1. Open a ticket (Support department) with the subject Restore domain yourdomain.com. Ask for a quote to restore it.
  2. We check with the registrar and send you the cost. Restore fees may apply; they are set by the registry and are usually much higher than a normal renewal. A restore always includes a renewal.
  3. Pay the invoice we send. Restores are processed manually, so allow up to a few working days.
  4. Once restored, the domain returns to Active and DNS resolves again.

Do not wait until the last days of redemption; the request has to be completed before the redemption period ends.

Step 2c: Pending delete or already released

A domain in pending delete cannot be restored by anyone. After about five days it is released, and you can try to register it again as a new domain at fimurohost.com/domain. If someone else registers it first, see The Domain I Want Is Taken.

After you get the domain back

  • Check the nameservers are correct under Nameservers.
  • Visit your website and send a test email to and from an address on the domain.
  • If the free SSL certificate expired while the domain was down, it will usually renew automatically once the domain points to us again. If not, reissue it in your control panel.
  • Check that auto-renew is on, and consider renewing for several years.
  • Update your account and domain contact email if the reminders did not reach you. Use an address that is not on the domain itself.

Common questions

  • Why is my site showing an ad or parking page? That is the expiry page shown while the domain is expired. It disappears after renewal.
  • Is my hosting affected? Your hosting files are not deleted because the domain expired, but hosting unpaid for more than about 5 days after its own due date is suspended. Check both invoices.
