How to Increase PHP Limits in cPanel (memory_limit, upload_max_filesize and More)

Raise memory_limit, upload_max_filesize, post_max_size and max_execution_time with the cPanel MultiPHP INI Editor, and pick the right PHP version per domain.

Errors such as “Allowed memory size exhausted”, “The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive” or “Maximum execution time exceeded” mean your website needs different PHP settings. In cPanel you change them yourself with the MultiPHP INI Editor, and you choose the PHP version for each domain with the MultiPHP Manager.

Some servers use a different PHP tool called Select PHP Version instead. If your plan includes it, you will see it in the Software section; the settings have the same names and a short note on it is at the end of this guide.

Step 1: Check your PHP version

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at https://app.fimurohost.com.
  2. Go to Services and select your cPanel Hosting plan.
  3. Click Login to cPanel. cPanel opens in a new tab, already signed in.
  4. In the Software section, click MultiPHP Manager.
  5. The table shows each domain and its PHP version. To change one, tick the checkbox next to the domain, choose a version from the PHP Version menu on the right and click Apply.

Use a currently supported PHP 8 release (8.2 or newer where your software supports it) for security and speed. Choosing inherit means the domain follows the server default. Before switching an older site, make sure its CMS, theme and plugins support the new version, and take a backup.

Step 2: Change PHP settings in Basic Mode

  1. In the Software section, click MultiPHP INI Editor.
  2. On the Basic Mode tab, choose the location under Configure PHP INI basic settings: pick the domain you want to change. (Choosing Home Directory affects only scripts outside the website folders.)
  3. Change the values you need (see the table below). On/off settings are switches; others are text boxes.
  4. Scroll down and click Apply.

Changes usually take effect within a minute or two. cPanel writes them to configuration files in that domain’s document root (such as php.ini and .user.ini, and sometimes .htaccess), so do not delete those files.

Settings people change most

DirectiveWhat it doesTypical value for WordPress / shops
memory_limitMaximum memory one PHP script can use256M (512M for large WooCommerce sites)
upload_max_filesizeLargest single file that can be uploaded64M or 128M
post_max_sizeLargest total form submission; must be equal to or bigger than upload_max_filesize64M or 128M
max_execution_timeSeconds a script may run120 to 300
max_input_timeSeconds allowed to receive upload data120 to 300
max_input_varsNumber of form fields accepted (large menus and theme options need more)3000 to 5000
display_errorsShows errors in the pageOff on live sites

The server may enforce upper limits for your plan. If a value does not seem to apply, check it (see below) and open a ticket if you need more than the maximum allowed.

Editor Mode (advanced)

The Editor Mode tab lets you type directives directly, one per line, for example:

memory_limit = 256M
upload_max_filesize = 128M
post_max_size = 128M
max_execution_time = 300
date.timezone = "Asia/Dhaka"

Choose the domain, edit and click Save.

Check that the change worked

Create a file called info.php in the domain’s document root containing:

<?php phpinfo();

Open https://yourdomain.com/info.php and search the page for the setting. The Local Value column is what your site uses. Delete the file straight afterwards; it reveals details about your server. In WordPress you can also check Tools » Site Health » Info » Server.

If your plan uses Select PHP Version

On servers with this tool, open Software » Select PHP Version, choose the version at the top, then open the Options tab to change the same directives, and the Extensions tab to turn PHP extensions on or off. Changes save automatically.

Common problems

  • Setting ignored: you changed the Home Directory instead of the domain, or a php_value line in .htaccess conflicts. Remove old php_value lines copied from another host.
  • 500 error after editing: a typing mistake in Editor Mode or in .htaccess. Fix or remove the last change.
  • Still “memory exhausted” at 256M: a plugin is usually misbehaving. Check the error log to find it rather than raising the limit further.
