How to Create a MySQL Database and User with the cPanel Database Wizard

Most websites, including WordPress, Joomla, Laravel and online shops, store their content in a MySQL database (on cPanel servers this is MySQL or its compatible sibling MariaDB). A database needs two things: the database itself and a database user with a password that your website uses to connect. The Database Wizard creates both and links them in one go.

Step by step

1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at https://app.fimurohost.com.
2. Go to Services and select your cPanel Hosting plan.
3. Click Login to cPanel. cPanel opens in a new tab, already signed in.
4. In the Databases section, click Database Wizard (named MySQL Database Wizard on some versions).

Step 1: Create a database

1. Type a short name in New Database, for example shop. cPanel automatically adds your cPanel username and an underscore in front, so the full name becomes something like username_shop.
2. Click Next Step.

Step 2: Create a database user

1. Type a short Username, for example shopuser. It also gets the prefix: username_shopuser.
2. Click Password Generator, copy the generated password to a safe place, tick that you have copied it and click Use Password. Or type your own strong password twice.
3. Click Create User.

Step 3: Add the user to the database

1. Tick ALL PRIVILEGES. Most web applications need full rights on their own database.
2. Click Next Step. The wizard confirms that the user was added to the database.

The details your website needs

For WordPress, these go in wp-config.php as DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST. On cPanel Hosting the database runs on the same server as your website, so the host is localhost.

Managing databases later

Databases » MySQL Databases is the full management page. There you can:

• See all databases, their size and which users have access.
• Create extra users, and change a user’s password under Current Users » Change Password. Remember to update the password in your website’s configuration file too.
• Add an existing user to another database under Add User To Database.
• Check and Repair a database if an application reports crashed tables.
• Rename or delete databases. Deleting is permanent, so export a copy with phpMyAdmin first.

Common problems

• “Error establishing a database connection”: usually the database name or username is missing its prefix, the password is wrong, or the user was never added to the database. Check each value against MySQL Databases.
• “Access denied for user”: reset the user’s password in cPanel and update your configuration file.
• Name too long: database and user names, including the prefix, have a maximum length. Keep the part you type short.
• Limit reached: your plan’s number of databases is shown in the Statistics panel.
