FTP programs such as FileZilla are the best way to upload many files or very large files to your website. In cPanel you can use your main cPanel login, or create separate FTP accounts for a developer or designer, each limited to one folder. Always use an encrypted connection: SFTP or FTP over TLS (FTPS), so your password and files are not sent in plain text.
Create an FTP account
- Log in to your FimuroHost client area at https://app.fimurohost.com.
- Go to Services and select your cPanel Hosting plan.
- Click Login to cPanel. cPanel opens in a new tab, already signed in.
- In the Files section, click FTP Accounts.
- Log In: a username, for example
designer. Choose the Domain; the full username becomes[email protected]. - Password and Password (Again): use a strong password or the Password Generator.
- Directory: the folder this account can access. cPanel fills in a new folder named after the user; change it to
public_html(or a subfolder of it) if the person needs to work on the website. The account cannot see anything above this folder. - Quota: a size limit, or Unlimited.
- Click Create FTP Account.
Delete FTP accounts as soon as a developer no longer needs access (Delete next to the account in FTP Accounts).
Which connection should I use?
| Method | Host | Port | Username |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTP over TLS (FTPS) – works for all FTP accounts | Your server hostname (from the welcome email) or ftp.yourdomain.com | 21 | Full FTP username, e.g. [email protected], or your cPanel username |
| SFTP – main cPanel account only, if SSH access is enabled on your plan | Your server hostname or domain | 22 (unless your welcome email says otherwise) | Your cPanel username |
SFTP runs over SSH, so it only works for the main cPanel user and only if SSH is enabled for your account. Extra FTP accounts use FTPS. Using the server hostname for FTPS avoids certificate warnings, because the FTP service presents the server’s certificate rather than your domain’s.
Connect with FileZilla
- Download FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org and install it.
- Open File » Site Manager and click New site. Give it a name.
- Protocol: choose FTP - File Transfer Protocol with Encryption: Require explicit FTP over TLS, or choose SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol if you use SFTP.
- Host and Port: from the table above.
- Logon Type: Normal (or Ask for password on a shared computer). Enter the username and password.
- Click Connect. The first time, FileZilla shows the server’s certificate or key; check that it names your server, tick Always trust and click OK.
The left side shows your computer; the right side shows the server. Open public_html (or the folder for your domain) on the right, then drag files across to upload.
Common problems
- “530 Login authentication failed”: FTP accounts need the full username with
@yourdomain.com. Reset the password in FTP Accounts » Change Password if unsure. - Connection times out or “Failed to retrieve directory listing”: make sure the transfer mode is Passive (FileZilla: Edit » Settings » Connection » FTP), and try another network; some networks block FTP.
- SFTP refused: SSH is probably not enabled for your plan. Use FTPS instead, or open a ticket to ask whether SSH can be enabled.
- Blocked after several failed logins: the server temporarily blocks IPs after repeated wrong passwords. Wait, correct the password and try again, or open a ticket with your IP address.
- Uploaded but site unchanged: check that you uploaded into the correct document root and clear caches.
Before your domain points to FimuroHost, ftp.yourdomain.com still reaches your old host. Use the server hostname from your welcome email instead.
