How to Add Addon Domains and Subdomains in cPanel

One cPanel Hosting plan can host more than one website. In current cPanel versions, both extra websites (addon domains) and subdomains are created in one place: Domains » Domains. The old separate “Addon Domains” and “Subdomains” pages have been merged into this tool.

• An addon domain is a completely separate domain, such as mysecondshop.com, with its own website, email and SSL.
• A subdomain is a part of an existing domain, such as blog.yourdomain.com or shop.yourdomain.com.
• An alias (formerly “parked domain”) shows the same website as another domain, for example yourdomain.net showing yourdomain.com.

How many domains and subdomains you can add depends on your plan. The limits appear in the Statistics panel on the cPanel home page.

Before you start (addon domains)

• You must own the domain. Register it at fimurohost.com/domain or anywhere else.
• Point the domain to your cPanel server: set its nameservers to the ones in your FimuroHost welcome email, or point its A record to your server’s IP address (shown under General Information in cPanel). You can create the domain in cPanel first, but the site will only load after DNS updates.

Add a new domain or subdomain

1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at https://app.fimurohost.com.
2. Go to Services and select your cPanel Hosting plan.
3. Click Login to cPanel. cPanel opens in a new tab, already signed in.
4. In the Domains section, click Domains, then Create A New Domain.
5. In Domain, type the full name: mysecondshop.com for an addon domain, or blog.yourdomain.com for a subdomain.
6. Share document root: this checkbox (“Share document root (/home/username/public_html) with ‘yourdomain.com’”) makes the new domain show the same website as your main domain, like an alias. For a separate website, untick it.
7. Document Root: the folder that will hold this site’s files. cPanel suggests one such as mysecondshop.com (that is, /home/username/mysecondshop.com). You can accept it or type your own.
8. Click Submit (or Submit And Create Another).

The domain now appears in the list. cPanel automatically creates the DNS zone for an addon domain and requests a free SSL certificate once the domain points to the server.

Upload the website

Put the new site’s files in the document root you chose, using File Manager or FTP. Until you upload something, visitors may see an empty directory listing or a default page. To install WordPress on the new domain, follow our WordPress installation guide and choose the new domain’s folder.

Manage a domain

In Domains » Domains, click Manage next to a domain to change its document root or remove it. The list also includes the Force HTTPS Redirect switch for each domain, which you should turn on once SSL is active.

Removing a domain

Removing a domain in cPanel removes its web configuration, but it does not delete the files in its document root or its email accounts. Delete those separately if you no longer need them, and back them up first.

Subdomain or subfolder?

yourdomain.com/blog is just a folder inside public_html and needs no setup. A subdomain like blog.yourdomain.com is treated as a separate site with its own document root and SSL certificate. Choose a subdomain when the section runs different software or should feel separate.

Common problems

• “The domain already exists”: it may already be on another hosting account on the server. Open a ticket so we can check.
• Site shows your old host or an error: DNS has not updated yet. Changes can take a few hours, occasionally up to 48 hours.
• Browser shows “Not secure”: open Security » SSL/TLS Status and click Run AutoSSL once DNS points to us.
• Subdomain does not load but the main domain does: if your DNS is hosted outside FimuroHost (for example Cloudflare), add an A record for the subdomain there.
