How to Connect via SSH with a Password and 2FA

Prefer not to manage SSH keys? Set an SSH password and an authenticator app in StackCP, then log in with a one-time code plus your password for secure access.

Instead of an SSH key, you can log in to your FimuroHost Cloud Hosting over SSH with a password plus a one-time code from an authenticator app. This two-factor (2FA) method is a good choice if you connect from different computers and don't want to copy key files around.

Before you start

  • An SSH client: on Windows, PuTTY or the built-in Windows Terminal; on macOS and Linux, the built-in Terminal.
  • An authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or another app that supports standard time-based codes.

Step 1: Set an SSH password and 2FA in StackCP

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at app.fimurohost.com.
  2. Go to Services and select your Cloud Hosting plan.
  3. Click Login to Control Panel / StackCP. StackCP opens for that website, already signed in.
  4. Under the Security section, click SSH Access.
  5. Under Set SSH password, choose a strong password and save it. Keep a note of it in your password manager.
  6. Click Set up Authenticator and scan the QR code with your authenticator app. A new entry appears in the app with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds.

Important: wait 30 minutes after setting this up before you try to connect. Earlier attempts will fail.

Step 2: Connect

With PuTTY (Windows)

  1. Open PuTTY, enter the host name ssh.stackcp.com and click Open.
  2. At login as: type your domain name, for example example.com.
  3. When asked for a verification code, enter the current code from your authenticator app.
  4. When asked for the password, enter your SSH password.

With Terminal (macOS, Linux, Windows 10/11)

ssh [email protected]

Enter the verification code and then your SSH password when prompted.

Common problems

  • Code rejected: make sure your phone's clock is set automatically. Authenticator codes depend on accurate time.
  • Failing right after setup: remember the 30-minute wait.
  • New phone: if you lose access to your authenticator app, set up the authenticator again in StackCP from your new device.
  • Typing the password: nothing appears on screen as you type. That is normal.
