How to Connect via SSH on a Mac or Linux Computer

macOS and Linux have SSH built in, so you don't need to install anything. In a few minutes you can create a secure key, add it to StackCP and open a command line on your FimuroHost Cloud Hosting.

These steps also work in Windows Terminal or PowerShell on Windows 10 and 11, which include OpenSSH.

Step 1: Create an SSH key

1. Open Terminal (on a Mac, search for it with Spotlight).
2. Run:

   ssh-keygen -t ed25519
   
                           
                       

3. Press Enter to accept the default file location.
4. Enter a passphrase (recommended) and confirm it. You can press Enter twice for no passphrase, but then anyone with the key file can log in.

Already have a key? You can reuse it; skip to step 2.

Step 2: Copy your public key

Print the public key and copy the entire line it shows:

cat ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub

                        
                    

On a Mac you can copy it straight to the clipboard with pbcopy < ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub. Always copy the file ending in .pub; the other file is your private key and must stay on your computer.

Step 3: Add the key in StackCP

1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area at app.fimurohost.com.
2. Go to Services and select your Cloud Hosting plan.
3. Click Login to Control Panel / StackCP. StackCP opens for that website, already signed in.
4. Under the Security section, click SSH Access.
5. Paste the key into the Public Key field. The handle (key name) usually fills in automatically.
6. Click Add Public Key.
7. Wait up to 5 minutes for the key to become active.

Step 4: Connect

The SSH Access page shows your SSH username and host. The username is normally your domain name and the host is ssh.stackcp.com:

ssh [email protected]

                        
                    

The first time you connect, you will be asked whether to trust the server. Type yes and press Enter, then enter your key passphrase if you set one. You are in.

Tips

• Save a shortcut. Add this to ~/.ssh/config and then just type ssh mysite:

  Host mysite
    HostName ssh.stackcp.com
    User example.com
  
                          
                      

• Key not accepted? If StackCP will not accept your key type, create an RSA key instead with ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 and use ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub.
• Transfer files too. The same login works for SFTP in apps like FileZilla or Cyberduck, or with scp on the command line.
