Can I See My FTP, Email or Database Passwords?

StackCP stores FTP, email and database passwords encrypted, so it can't show them. Learn which password is visible, how to reset the rest and where your site keeps its database password.

For security, FimuroHost stores your FTP, email and database passwords in encrypted form. That means StackCP can't show them to you in plain text, and neither can our support team.

If you've forgotten one, you can set a new one yourself.

The one exception: your main FTP account

The password for the first FTP account on a hosting package is shown on the right-hand side of the package's page in StackCP. Additional FTP accounts you create later work like the others: you can change their password, but you can't view it.

Resetting a password

  1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area, open Services and select your hosting plan.
  2. Click Login to Control Panel / StackCP. StackCP opens with the tools for that website (single sign-on, so there is no second password to type).
  3. Go to the relevant section: your FTP details, the email account you want to change, or MySQL Databases for a database.
  4. Choose the option to change the password, enter a strong new one and save.

In most cases the new password works straight away.

Finding your database password without resetting it

Your website already knows its database password, because it's saved in the site's configuration file. For WordPress, open wp-config.php in the site's root folder with the StackCP File Manager and look for:

define( 'DB_PASSWORD', '...' );

Other apps keep it in files such as .env, config.php or configuration.php.

Before you change a password

  • Database: if you change it in StackCP, update your site's config file straight away, or the site will stop connecting to its database.
  • Email: every device that uses the mailbox (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, the Gmail app, your phone) will ask for the new password. Update each one.
  • FTP: update saved connections in FileZilla, WinSCP or your code editor. Where you can, connect with SFTP rather than plain FTP so your password isn't sent unencrypted.

Tips

  • Keep passwords in a password manager rather than a text file on your desktop.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for your FimuroHost client area, because it's the key to all your other logins.
