FimuroHost sells two kinds of Virtual Private Server (VPS): Unmanaged VPS and Managed VPS. Both come in the same sizes (1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 CPU cores) and run on the same fast infrastructure. The difference is who looks after the server once it is running.
This guide explains exactly what we handle, what you handle, and how to decide which one suits your project. If you are still unsure after reading it, ask our Sales team before you order.
The short version
- Unmanaged VPS is a blank Linux (or Windows) server with full root (administrator) access. You install and maintain everything on it: web server, PHP, databases, firewall, updates, backups and any control panel.
- Managed VPS gives you the resources of a VPS with the StackCP hosting control panel on top. We take care of the operating system, server software and security updates. You manage websites, email, databases and files in StackCP, the same way you would on our Cloud Hosting.
Who does what
| Task | Unmanaged VPS | Managed VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware, network, power and the virtualisation platform | FimuroHost | FimuroHost |
| Installing the operating system when the VPS is created | FimuroHost (you choose the OS) | FimuroHost |
| Operating system and security updates | You | FimuroHost |
| Root / administrator access | Yes, full root access | No, the server is locked down for you |
| Control panel | None. Install your own if you want one | StackCP included |
| Web server, PHP, databases, mail software | You install and configure them | Provided and maintained by us |
| Server firewall and hardening | You | FimuroHost |
| Your website code, WordPress, plugins and themes | You | You |
| Backups of your data | You (snapshot backups only if your plan or an add-on includes them) | Use the backup tools in StackCP where available, and keep your own copies |
| Support scope | The VPS itself: availability, network, console access, reboots, reinstalls, upgrades, billing | The server and hosting platform, plus help using StackCP |
“Unmanaged” does not mean unsupported. If the VPS will not boot, has no network, or you are locked out, we will help. What we do not do on an Unmanaged VPS is install, configure or debug the software you run on it.
Choose an Unmanaged VPS if…
- You (or your developer) are comfortable with the Linux command line and SSH.
- You need software that shared-style hosting cannot run: Docker, Node.js or Python services with custom ports, game or voice servers, VPN software, custom databases, background workers, or a specific PHP build.
- You want to install your own free control panel, such as CloudPanel or HestiaCP.
- You are happy to take responsibility for security updates, the firewall and backups.
Choose a Managed VPS if…
- You mainly host websites (WordPress, WooCommerce, Laravel, plain PHP) and want more guaranteed resources than shared hosting.
- You want a familiar control panel (StackCP) with one-click installs, email accounts, free SSL and DNS management.
- You would rather we handle operating system patches, server security and the web server stack.
- You do not need root access.
What about Windows VPS?
A Windows VPS runs Windows Server and is accessed with Remote Desktop using the Administrator account. It works like an Unmanaged VPS: you install Windows updates, IIS or other software and manage the Windows firewall yourself, unless your plan description says otherwise. See How to Connect to a Windows VPS with Remote Desktop.
Can I switch later?
- Bigger or smaller size, same type: yes. Use Upgrade/Downgrade on the service in your client area. See How to Upgrade or Downgrade Your VPS Plan.
- Unmanaged to Managed (or the other way): these are different services, so it is not a one-click upgrade. Your sites have to be moved to a new VPS of the other type. Open a ticket with the Sales department and we will explain the options for your case.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get root access on a Managed VPS?
No. Keeping root access with us is what allows us to maintain and secure the server for you. If you need root, choose an Unmanaged VPS.
Will you install software for me on an Unmanaged VPS?
Installing and configuring software is your responsibility on an Unmanaged VPS. Our guides cover the most common tasks step by step, for example installing Nginx, MariaDB and PHP and running WordPress on a VPS.
Where do I find my VPS login details?
In your FimuroHost client area under Services, select the VPS to see its IP address and login details. They are also in the welcome email we sent when the VPS was set up. Next, follow First Steps After Your Unmanaged VPS Is Ready.
Where can I compare prices and sizes?
Current plans and prices are on our pricing page.
Need help?
Not sure which VPS type is right for your project? Tell us what you want to run and we will suggest a plan. If something about the VPS itself is not working (it won't start, you can't reach it, or you need console access, an upgrade or a reinstall), open a support ticket from your client area or message us on WhatsApp at 01818160926. Include your VPS IP address and what you have already tried so we can help faster.
