Update Domain Contact (WHOIS) Details and the Change of Registrant Lock

Every domain has contact records, often called WHOIS details: the Registrant (the legal owner), plus Administrative, Technical and Billing contacts. ICANN requires these details to be accurate and kept up to date. This guide shows how to edit them and explains the special rules that apply when the owner changes.

Edit the contact details

1. Log in to your FimuroHost client area, go to Domains → My Domains, and click the domain (or the Manage button next to it).
2. Open Contact Information.
3. You see a section (or tab) for each contact type. For each one, you can usually choose to use one of your existing account contacts or enter custom details.
4. Update the fields: name, organisation, email, phone (in international format, for example +880 1XXXXXXXXX), address, city, postcode and country.
5. Click Save Changes.

Some extensions do not allow certain fields to be changed online, or need documents for an ownership change. If you see an error, open a ticket.

Changing your account profile is not the same

Updating your details under the account menu → Your Profile changes your FimuroHost account and billing details. It does not automatically update the contacts of domains you already own. Update the domain's Contact Information separately.

Change of Registrant: what counts

ICANN treats a material change to the registrant as a Change of Registrant. That means a change to the registrant's:

• name,
• organisation, or
• email address.

Correcting a typo in the street address or updating a phone number is not a Change of Registrant.

What happens after a Change of Registrant

1. Confirmation. The registrar sends a confirmation request, normally by email, and the change is only completed once it is confirmed. Both the previous and new registrant are notified.
2. Email verification. If the email address changed, the new address must be verified within 15 days. See Verify Your Domain Contact Email.
3. 60-day transfer lock. After a Change of Registrant, the domain cannot be transferred to another registrar for 60 days. This protects owners against a hijacker who changes the details and immediately moves the domain.

Avoiding the 60-day lock

ICANN allows registrars to offer an opt-out from this lock, which must be chosen before the change is made. If the contact form shows an option such as opt out of the 60-day transfer lock, tick it only if you plan to transfer the domain soon. If you do not see the option, the registrar does not offer an opt-out for that domain, and support cannot remove the lock afterwards.

Planning to transfer the domain to another registrar anyway? Transfer first, and update the contact details at the new registrar afterwards. ICANN is working on changes to the transfer rules that may remove this particular lock in future, but until they take effect, the 60-day rule applies.

Giving the domain to someone else

• They will use FimuroHost too: ask us to move the domain to their account. See Move a Domain to Another FimuroHost Account.
• They use another registrar: give them the EPP code and let them transfer it, then they update the registrant at their registrar.

Tips

• Use a company name in the organisation field if the domain belongs to a business, so ownership stays with the business if staff change.
• Never let a web designer register the domain in their own name on your behalf. The registrant is the owner.
• WHOIS privacy hides these details from public lookups, but they must still be correct.
